On a recent trip to George in a rental vehicle from george car hire, we traveled the road which takes you through the Outeniqua Mountains and along the Montague Pass. It is difficult to believe that this road was built over 150 years ago, which took an average of three days to cross over but now can be accomplished within 15 minutes by car. This road also took over 250 manual laborers of all whom were convicts. This was decided by the Surveyor General at the time, Major Mitchell. The pass was appropriately named after John Montagu, the Colonial Secretary at the time who personally opened the official pass in 1948.
