One key to finding cheap hotels is to be as flexible as you can. For example, if you are traveling in your car over a long distance, does it really matter which towns you stop in for the night? The hotels in one may be half the price of those just thirty minutes away. As evening approaches, drive off on easy exits to start checking prices. If you find a great deal, stop there for the night.

Another way to use your flexibility is to be ready to walk away from a hotel as a negotiating tactic. We have paid less several times simply by offering less and making it clear that we were otherwise continuing on. Owners hate to have too many empty rooms if they can get something for them
